About Me
My love of writing has taken me on a wild ride.
My name is Lori Riley, and I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember.
But writing for a living is nothing like what I imagined as a kid.
I thought writing would be a leisure activity carried out under a sheltering oak tree.
I’d sit on the bank of a small stream. The sun would warm me as the sounds of nature would inspire and soothe me.
Well, no.
Writing is fluorescent lights, caffeine and deadlines. Any illusions I had about writing were dispelled early in adulthood.
But still, I kept with it. Earned a degree in journalism, and began writing for pay.
Anyone who writes for pay knows it’s solitary work that is often undervalued. You could call it brutal.
Even so, I still wanted to write.
Over the years, I have written articles about home improvement, health, business, family, home decor, and everything in between. I’ve been the editor of publications including Pittsburgh magazine, Charlotte Woman, and Break magazine.
Over time, I developed a set of principles that have guided me in my work, which you can read on this page.
Most recently, I have specialized in writing for the mental health field. And more specifically, about Substance Use Disorder. You can read samples of my writing by clicking the Portfolio link in the menu above.
My writing expertise includes subjects such as:
- Substance Use Disorder / Chemical Dependency
- Counseling Services
- Crisis Intervention
- Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
- DUI Recovery Programs
- Medically Monitored Withdrawal
- Mental Hygiene Petitions
- Short and Long Term Residential Treatment
- Peer Recovery Support
- Clinical Assessments
- Psychiatric Evaluations
And has included:
- General website content
- Entire website rewrites
- Newsletters
- Media releases
- Marketing projects
Principles I live by:
- I respect the fact that you are busy.
- My writing represents you. As such, your voice should be heard. If the copy doesn’t feel right, I’ll rewrite it until it does.
- I look at every writing assignment as a fresh opportunity to help my clients shine.
- Large projects can be divided into smaller jobs to be accomplished over time.
- I will offer many suggestions, which you are free to accept or reject.
- I will provide you with a timeline. You can make any adjustments as needed.
- You can and should expect me to meet your deadlines.
- In turn, I ask that you respond in a timely manner to my submissions or questions.
- I will happily adjust my proposal to meet your budget.
- Regardless of the size of project, I will always provide you with top-notch writing.
